Meet Julia
My name is Julia and I’m an Australian interior designer based in New York. After a career in fashion, I made the transition to interiors, recently graduating remotely from Sydney Design School. For the last year, I’ve been working as an Interior Design Assistant for an independent designer, gaining hands-on experience in everything from drafting and 3D modelling to sourcing, project management, and client presentations. Along the way, I’ve immersed myself in New York’s design scene—countless showroom visits and conversations with suppliers have helped me build a strong industry network, ensuring I can hit the ground running in my next role.
My interior design education started very young, and many of my childhood memories still underpin my design philosophy today. However, it was during my time living in Paris that my love of design expanded immensely, with countless hours spent in historic antique markets and iconic cookware stores, absorbing unfathomable amounts of architectural beauty every day. This experience marked the decision to pursue my interest formally.
I thrive on the variety interior design brings—from research and sourcing to refining a floor plan, overseeing an install, or collaborating with contractors. I’m highly organised, detail-oriented, and adaptable. Throughout my career, I am always looking for ways to be a strong support to others on my team.
I’m now looking to join a growing studio where I can learn from brilliant designers, contribute meaningfully, and be part of projects I’m proud of. I want to give my all to the next chapter of my career—working with people who share my passion for bringing beautiful spaces to life.
Design Philosophy
My design philosophy is informed by the belief that interiors should be timeless, layered, and deeply reflective of the people who inhabit them. I’m particularly drawn to historical homes and spaces where traditional craftsmanship is honoured alongside contemporary materials. When done right, this harmonious blend of old and new—allowing the past to inform the present—creates an atmosphere that feels warm, inviting, and, most importantly, personal.
I place great importance on understanding the emotional tone clients wish to evoke in their spaces. I believe that great design is the result of a collaborative process between the client and designer, as well as the suppliers, craftsmen, and artisans who bring the vision to life.
By considering every element of the design—from architectural details and joinery to materiality, furniture, and the curation of objects—I strive to create environments that both honour a home’s historical character and stand the test of time—where antiques sit effortlessly alongside contemporary pieces, craftsmanship is celebrated, and every detail feels intentional.
Inspiration
Design Influence
When it comes to design, I’m endlessly inspired by the work of designers and stylists like Rose Uniacke, Phoebe Nicol, Robert Kime, Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler, Omer Gilony and Colin King - amongst countless others. I’m also currently enamored by the work of Charlotte de Tonnac and Hugo Sauzay of Festen, in particular their work on Château Voltaire in Paris.
Movies and set design are a source of great inspiration for me. From the maximalist, artful worlds of productions like Marie Antoinette, Palm Royale, or Moulin Rouge, to the more timeless, all-American creations of Beth Rubino on a Nancy Meyers film, I appreciate every meticulous detail of good set design.
And as cliché as it is, New York City has also been a huge influence on my design. From the art deco apartment lobbies and historical buildings to the incredible galleries and suppliers, this city really is a constant source of creative energy for me.
Books & Magazines
I find constant inspiration in my collection of design and art books and magazines. I’ve recently started collecting The World of Interiors from the 1980s and 1990s, and I’ve been very inspired by how relevant many of the covers and features from that era still feel today. It has been a beautiful reminder of how truly timeless great design is. Other favourites include Rose Uniacke At Work, Arranging Things by Colin King, and Barbie Dreamhouse: An Architectural Survey.
Antiques & Design Finds
I am always on the hunt for unique treasures - whether antique and vintage furniture or simply beautifully made objects. A few of my favourite sources for antiques include 1st Dibbs, The Vault Sydney, William Green, The Gallery, and Philip Colleck. I’m also constantly exploring Instagram for dealers of one-of-a-kind pieces—like Les Collection, Curio Shop and Broyt.
Personal Interests
Outside of design, I love traveling, cooking, hosting dinner parties, and creating the perfect tablescape. I also enjoy collecting 1990s Barbies, dog-watching on the Upper East Side, rollerskating in Central Park, and listening to my favorite pop divas.
New York’s hospitality scene is a major source of joy to me—there’s really nothing better to me than a great bowl of pasta or a cold martini in a beautiful hotel bar after a day of design exploration!
